Three different things put you in an order here, and they answer different questions. Which one applies depends on what you are playing.
In a box: points
You get points for a result, and the table sorts on them. A win is worth more than a loss, and losing a close match is worth more than losing an easy one.
Level on points is settled by a tie-break your club chooses, and the table's footer prints which one. See How the points table works.
The table is worked out from the scores every time it is drawn. Nothing is stored, so correcting a score corrects the table.
On the ladder: a rating
A number that follows you all year rather than a place in a season. Everybody starts on the same one.
Beating somebody above you is worth more than beating somebody below you, and losing to somebody below you costs more. Your place on the ladder is just everybody's ratings in order.

In a draw: a seed
A seed is not earned by results here. It is a number your organiser types before the draw is made, saying who they expect to go furthest.
It decides where you go in the bracket, so the strongest entries meet as late as possible. See How a tournament draw works.
Leave the seeds blank and every line is drawn by lot.
On a club night: the points you won
Not a table position at all. Your score is the points your side won that evening, added up, and the highest total wins the night.
