Free tennis tournament draw generator

Type the entries for one event, put your seeds at the top in order, and get a knockout draw with the seeds on the right lines and the byes where they belong. Print the draw sheet, or draw again. A badminton, squash, padel or pickleball event is drawn the same way.

How the draw is made

A tournament draw keeps the seeds apart and gives them the byes

  • The draw is the next power of two. Thirteen entries make a draw of sixteen, with three byes.
  • Seed one goes at the top and seed two at the bottom. Seeds three and four are drawn into the two quarters left, and so on, so the best players can only meet late.
  • The byes go to the seeds first, then spread evenly, so no first-round match has two.
  • Everybody else is drawn by lot into the lines that are left.

This is the same draw a tournament in Clayside makes. For the reasoning, read how to make a tournament draw with byes and how to seed and draw your club championships.

Questions

What organisers ask about the tournament draw generator

How many seeds can a draw have?

Two in a draw of up to eight, four up to sixteen, and eight up to thirty-two, which is the rule the governing bodies use. The generator allows that many and no more.

Where do the byes go?

To the seeds first, in order, and then spread evenly through the draw, so no first-round match has two. The number of byes is the draw size minus the entries: thirteen entries in a draw of sixteen means three byes.

Is the draw random?

The seeds go on fixed lines, and seeds three and four (and five to eight) are drawn by lot into theirs. Everybody else is drawn by lot. Press Draw again to make a new draw from the same entries.

Does it work for badminton, squash, padel and pickleball?

Yes. A knockout draw is made the same way in every racket sport: the seeds, the byes and the lot do not change. Only the scores written on the sheet do.

Can I keep two players from the same family apart?

Not automatically. Draw again until they land in different halves, or swap two unseeded names by hand on the printed sheet before you publish it.
