How the bracket is made

A pickleball bracket keeps the top seeds apart and gives them the byes

  • The bracket is the next power of two. Six teams make a bracket of eight, and eleven make a bracket of sixteen with five byes.
  • Seed one goes at the top and seed two at the bottom, so the two best teams can only meet in the final. Seeds three and four are drawn into the quarters left.
  • The byes go to the seeds first, then spread evenly, so no first-round match is two byes.
  • Every other team is drawn by lot into the lines that are left.

Playing a round robin first, to seed the bracket? The pickleball round robin generator makes the schedule and the points table. For the reasoning behind the byes, read how to make a tournament draw with byes. The same bracket for a tennis club is the tournament draw generator.

Questions

What organisers ask about the pickleball bracket generator

How do I make a bracket for 6 teams?

Type the six teams, best first if you are seeding. A bracket is the next power of two, so six teams make a bracket of eight with two byes. With two seeds, the byes go to seeds one and two, who start in the semi-finals.

Is it single or double elimination?

Single elimination: a team that loses is out. For a second chance, make a consolation bracket from the first-round losers. In Clayside that is a plate: lose your first match and you drop into a second knockout underneath the main one.

How should we seed the teams?

By rating, or by last season's results, best team first. Seed one goes at the top and seed two at the bottom, so they can only meet in the final. Two seeds suit a bracket of up to eight teams, four up to sixteen.

Does it work for singles?

Yes. Type one player a line instead of a team. The bracket, the seeds and the byes work the same way.

Is anything saved or sent anywhere?

Nothing is sent and nothing is kept. A bracket is made once, in front of the players, and Draw again makes a new one from the same teams.
