Free squash box league spreadsheet
The squash box league sheet on the board by the courts, as a spreadsheet that works itself out. Type the names, pick each best-of-five result from a drop-down in the grid, and the table sorts itself, with who goes up and who goes down. In Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice.
An .xlsx file with 4 boxes of up to 8 players, a Settings tab and a Read me. Nothing to sign up for.
Box 1, with nine results in
Each result is picked once, above the dark diagonal, in games. The other half fills itself in.
| No. | Player | Priya | Sam | Jo | Alex | Tom |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Priya | 3-1 | 3-2 | 2-3 | 3-0 | |
| 2 | Sam | 1-3 | 3-2 | 3-0 | 1-3 | |
| 3 | Jo | 2-3 | 2-3 | 3-1 | 3-0 | |
| 4 | Alex | 3-2 | 0-3 | 1-3 | ||
| 5 | Tom | 0-3 | 3-1 | 0-3 |
Green is a win, amber a loss having won a game, red a loss. A typed score is refused: a result is one of 8 from the drop-down.
The table it works out
| Place | Player | Played | Won | Lost | Games | Points | Moves |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Priya | 4 | 3 | 1 | 11-6 | 11 | |
| 2 | Sam | 4 | 2 | 2 | 8-8 | 10 | |
| 3 | Jo | 4 | 2 | 2 | 10-7 | 10 | |
| 4 | Alex | 3 | 1 | 2 | 4-8 | 6 | |
| 5 | Tom | 3 | 1 | 2 | 3-7 | 5 | Down |
Sam and Jo are level on points, and Sam is above because Sam won the match between them. Points are 3 for a win, 2 for a loss having won a game and 1 for a loss in straight games, the same as the box league rules template for squash. Box 1 sends nobody up. Change all of it on the Settings tab.
What is in it
A squash box league grid, a table that sorts itself, and the moves
- A results grid for each box. Names down the side and across the top, the way a squash box sheet is always drawn.
- Results in games, from a drop-down. 3-0, 3-1, 3-2, 2-3, 1-3, 0-3 or a walkover, and nothing else, so a mistyped score cannot break the table.
- Both halves of the grid. Pick the result once and the other player's side fills itself in, coloured green, amber or red.
- Once or twice, from a drop-down. Played twice, the half below the diagonal turns cream for the second match, and the table counts both.
- A table that sorts itself. Points, then the result between the players level, then game difference, with each player's matches left.
- Who goes up and who goes down, from the Settings tab, with a minimum number of matches to go up.
For the rules to go with it, read how to run a squash box league, or fill in the box league rules template, which writes them in games for squash. A tennis box is best of three sets, and the tennis box league spreadsheet takes those.
Questions
What clubs ask about the squash box league spreadsheet
Does it work in Google Sheets?
Yes. Open Google Sheets, choose File, then Import, and upload the file. It works in Excel and LibreOffice as it is, drop-downs and colours included.
How do I put a score in?
Find the row player and the column player above the dark diagonal, and pick the result in games from the drop-down, from the row player's side: 3-0, 3-1, 3-2, 2-3, 1-3, 0-3 or a walkover. The same match below the diagonal fills itself in.
How are the points worked out?
3 for a win, 2 for a loss having won a game and 1 for a loss in straight games, so a 2-3 loss is worth more than a 0-3. Change any of them on the Settings tab and every box follows.
Can each pair play twice?
Yes. Each box has a drop-down beside its grid: Once or Twice. Played twice, the first match goes above the dark diagonal and the second below it, and the table counts both.
How many players can a box have?
Up to 8, in 4 boxes. A box of five uses the first five names. For more boxes, copy a Box tab, rename it, and change Boxes in use on the Settings tab.
How are players level on points separated?
By the result between them first. With three or more level, wins over each other count, then game difference, then the order the names were typed.
Can players put in their own scores?
Not in a spreadsheet, unless you share it with everybody and trust them all with every cell. That is the point where most clubs move to an app, where players enter and confirm their own scores and the table updates itself.
