Badminton ladder

A badminton ladder system that keeps itself

Clayside is a badminton ladder system for clubs: singles or doubles, every match rated, and players putting their own scores in from club night.

How it works

A badminton ladder match, from the hall to the table

Play on club night

Two players or two pairs near each other on the ladder play a match on a spare court, or on another evening they arrange between them.

Record it in the hall

Best of three to 21, or to 15 if your club plays the shorter game. Either player puts it in before they have their coat on.

The ladder moves

Ratings change straight away. A good win moves you further than a scrape, and the table in the group chat link is right tonight.

The rules

How the badminton ladder decides who is where

Your club can widen the range or change when resting starts. The starting rating and the open matches are the same at every club.

1200

A rating to start on

Everybody starts level. The first match puts a player on the table.

3

Three open matches

A new player can play anyone for their first three, and those count for more.

±5

The match range

After that, a result is rated between players this many places apart, so the top of the ladder plays the top.

90

Days to a rest

Stop playing and, after this, a rating slips a little each month. One match and it stops slipping.

Nobody swaps places by winning, and nobody is marked down for saying no. The rating is the order.

Doubles, the way badminton plays

A badminton doubles ladder, two ways

Level pairs

The pair is the entry

Two players hold one place and one rating, for the clubs whose pairs stay together all season.

Rotating

Everybody rates for themselves

Partners change from match to match and each player keeps their own number. A side plays at the average of its two.

Questions

What badminton clubs ask about the ladder

We keep our ladder on a spreadsheet. What changes?

Nobody updates it. Players record their own results, the opponent can say a score was wrong, and the order works itself out from every result there has been.

Can the ladder run alongside our league teams?

Yes. The ladder is the club’s own and runs whenever people play. Your county league fixtures carry on exactly as they are.

Can we have a singles ladder and a doubles ladder?

Yes, and more. A paid plan holds up to 8 ladders, each singles, level pairs or rotating doubles.

Does it send results to Badminton England?

Not yet. The ladder rating stays inside your club. If you would like results to go somewhere else, tell us where and we will build it.
